What fire safety maintenance is required for a supermarket?
Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person must keep fire safety systems maintained in efficient working order. In practice, a supermarket needs fire alarm and detection systems serviced at least every six months (BS 5839-1), monthly and annual emergency lighting tests (BS 5266-1), and annual servicing of extinguishers and hose reels. Depending on the size and layout of the sales floor, sprinklers and voice alarm systems may also be required.
We audit every asset in your store to make sure you comply with the law without over-investing.
How long does fire protection installation and maintenance take in a fashion store?
Routine planned maintenance in your store takes just a few hours and is always scheduled outside trading hours so it does not interrupt sales. If you are carrying out a full refurbishment, we coordinate the work with your construction and visual merchandising teams so you can open to the public on schedule.
Do you offer an emergency service during peak season if my store is in a shopping centre?
Yes, we have a technical emergency service available 24 hours a day. We understand that a fire door fault or a false alarm in your store during key trading periods such as Black Friday or the sales brings takings to a halt, so we respond immediately to resolve the issue.
How is passive fire protection maintained?
Unlike active systems that put out a fire with water or foam, passive fire protection is built into the structure of the premises to contain a fire and stop it spreading. We inspect, adjust and repair fire doors, fire dampers, suspended ceilings and compartmentation elements in your store.
In retail premises such as homeware stores, it is vital to check self-closing devices, ironmongery and intumescent seals around pipe and cable penetrations regularly. That way, in an emergency, smoke and flames are contained within a single compartment, protecting the structure of the store and allowing safe evacuation.
How often should a retail franchise have its fire extinguishers serviced?
In the UK, portable fire extinguishers should be visually checked monthly (this can be done by store staff) and serviced annually by a competent engineer in line with BS 5306-3. Depending on the type of extinguisher, an extended service or discharge test is also carried out every five years.
What documentation do you provide after fire safety maintenance?
We issue service certificates and update your fire safety logbook with the condition of every piece of equipment in the store (detectors, alarms, hose reels and more). This documentation is essential to support your fire risk assessment, pass fire and rescue service inspections and keep your business insurance valid.
